The Artist John Smith Gumbula is an Aboriginal Artist from the Wakka Wakka nation
in the south Burnett region of Queensland, Australia. John's skills have been honed
over a 13 year period as a commercial artist & cultural teacher working in many
mediums & styles based around his indigenous designs & culture. John's artistic
creations are inspired by his own real-life experiences, his family and time spent of
growing up in indigenous communities throughout Australia. John has travelled
extensively throughout the indigenous communities of Australia, and overseas,
from the urbane centers of our cities to the rural communities of the outback. In his
travels he has seen many facets of our country all of which are closely connected to
his aboriginality & culture.
As a contemporary Aboriginal artist John has taken on the ever important task of assisting non-aboriginal people to better understand & become educated in the culture, mind-set and creativity of Aboriginal Australia. This creative flexibility allows John to create and interpret traditional ideas, spiritual meaning and stories into contemporary designs and media while displaying appropriate cultural respect and integrity. John has been involved in many projects and has worked in many mediums, from slumped glass, copper etching, through to digital art & multimedia. In recent times John has had a range of indigenous designed Beanie Kids accepted by Skansen productions, this is a first for an indigenous artist in Australia. Another of John's projects is Indigemail.com, a free web based email server with an indigenous theme. With his long time associate & collaborator Tony Fox, John was able to see his dreams bought into reality. John's artwork can be viewed at his website listed on the right of this page.
