THE WATERLOO, OCTOBER 29 2000

All day, week and month, I had been waiting for this night. Diana Ah Naid and Lavish, two of my favourite Australian artists, LIVE in one night. The excitement was more then I could handle. The excitement was so intense that I became a regular visitor to the ladies room. Finally, after all the waiting, the night began…

The first band to grace us with their presence were Carousel. When they started one word came in to my mind - LOUD! I wish I had taken my earplugs. The band was brilliant. The main singer had the most gorgeous smile (I wish I could have told him that!) They compare to the likes of Pollyanna, Violetine and Sidewinder, and this is a band I will definitely see again. Unfortunately, there weren’t a lot of people there to witness them.

THE FLYING CHIMNEES

The Flying Chimnees, a 4 piece band with a female, guitar playing lead singer, took the stage next. They weren’t too bad, the songs were all just a bit too similiar with other bands. This may not have been intentional but it was way too obvious. The lead singer had a great voice, I would have liked to have seen her face a bit more though - unfortunately, her fringe covered her face for most of the set. During a very Living End-type song the leading lady took out her tambourine and had a bit of a dance on the stage. To end the set she turned and faced the drummer, holding her guitar above her head and then she threw it on the drum kit. The Flying Chimnees weren’t a bad band, they were just too much like other bands and did not posses enough creativity.
Next came the Lavish lads, doing it acoustic on this beautiful Friday night. They kicked off their set with “She Said”, followed by a lot of new songs from their forthcoming EP, leaving room for only 1 or 2 oldies. By this time the Waterloo was jam packed with people and when Lavish came to the stage the crowd drew nearer to the front. For me, it was the first time that I had ever seen the guys acoustic. Bass player Luke Thomas was supposed to do some vocals but he was cursed with a frog in his throat. Nathan’s voice was superb as per usual and all the music sounded great. The band was questioned a little about Gary and Jeff - obviously these people in the crowd had not been told that the lads had left Lavish. They may have left the band but the lads will go on and they still go off!

To end the Lavish set the boys chose to do a cover of the song “Sonnet” by “The Verve.” I'm convinced that Lavish are definitely under rated and deserve more of a following then they have got. From what I could tell the crowd were happy with the Lavish set and the 2 people dancing were mighty grateful. Acoustic or otherwise, Lavish are an awesome band.

SKULKER

Skulker came on the stage to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. As soon as they came on, the crowd ran to the front of the stage cheering, screaming, clapping and going wild! It was obvious then who the people were all at the Waterloo to see. There was a lot movement and a shit load of singing - well, yelling, but close enough! The all girl band started their night off sounding fantastic and improved immensely as the show went on. They had great bass, great clothes, great songs, great voices, actually Skulker were pretty close to perfection. After pushing my way to the front of the crowd I some how managed to take a photo of the lead singer. God, she can sing! I was very impressed with Skulker and I strongly recommend seeing them if you ever have the opportunity.
To end the night was the beautiful and fantastic Diana Ah Naid. Off goes the music in the background of the busy club and on came the strobes, Diana and the band. Oh, and lets not forget the rush to the front of the stage. Looking fabulous as always she greeted the crowd, which appeared to have shrunk substantially since Skulker had played. This made our night with Diana far more intimate. She is truly amazing. They did the classic song “I’ll Go Off” and that song always makes crowds go wild! Her set was almost perfect too. They left the stage for about 2 minutes and then came back and said to us “1 more and that’s it!”, and they promptly punched out the tune “Perfect Family”.

After the long and extremely loud night ended I left the Waterloo in a daze. I couldn’t believe that the night had already come to a halt.
