THE ZOO, JULY 22 2000

A solid 4/4 doof was pounding out of The Zoo as I entered, and it was Melbourne trio Opsinath who were responsible. Their set was very much on the minimalist techno tip, with a solid kick punctuated by an assortment of noises by the live percussionists and some impressive theremin squeals. None of their tunes really went anywhere in particular, but a few hardy souls were already cutting loose on the dancefloor and the last track, a dark little drum n bass number, showed signs of intricacy which were unfortunately lost in the mix. But there was at least one girl in the crowd who seemed VERY keen to see the lads back in BrisVegas as soon as possible!
DJ SIMON
SIMON DURRINGTON - THE BIRD
The Bird's keyboard whiz Simon spun some jungle between sets to get the punters salivating for the main course, which was of course The Bird themselves. This Sydney duo have established a reputation as one of Brisbane's favourite live acts, and yet another full house greeted Simon and Ben as they took The Zoo stage just after midnight. Even after seeing them on 8 previous occasions, The Bird never cease to amaze.
Tonight they introduced some new sounds to their set, fusing Ben's frenetic breakbeats with some more pure drum n bass sounds - the newer tracks take a bit of a step back from the squelchy acid-trance synth riffs of the Roland Juno, instead favouring deep, sinister basslines and eerie keyboard drones. And the raw percussion power was still there, especially when Byron Bay percussionist Matt Goodwin and the lads from Opsinath joined them on stage for an intense journey through some traditional Polynesian Doof! But it was the old classics like "Magid Khan" and "Lei Keung" which really whipped the punters (particularly this one) into a frenzy, and once again The Zoo faithful were left thouroughly exhausted by one the best and most unique live electronic acts in the land. What more can I say - bring on the album!
