The Parklands were coated with succulent green grass early in the morning. By lunch time they were covered with a huge enthusiastic crowd. The heavens and the clouds behaved wonderfully exposing only clear blue skies throughout the day.
TISM
I was walking towards stage two with the crowd mingling all around me. TISM would be live and ready in about 15 minutes. They were scheduled on at 4.10 pm. I anticipated their arrival, I wondered what fabulous outfits they would entertain us with on this hot summer afternoon on the hottest coast on the eastern side of OZ.
I was half way there, to stage 2 that is, and as my left foot was about to step in front of my right foot - "Greg the Stop Sign" blared in my ears. The crowd began to run past me, my camera nearly swung off my shoulder. I think it was the first time I witnessed a band appearing before the audience arrived.
I could see them all very clearly from afar. The balloon red head gear made of silk-like satin blowing in the wind high above the stage. The black masks tightly covered their faces. Only their eyes, nose and lips were clearly exposed. Their entire bodies were covered in the glowing red material that exposed only their hands and mask. As I reached the front of the stage I could see the large drops of sweat dribbling down from every orifice exposed to the sun-light. The red costumes in the sun light were visibly exhilarating but for them too much heat I thought.
The madness continued and the crowd enjoyed every minute of it. On several occasions one red costume would launch off the stage and into the crowd, but the mask remained untouched. On one occasion Hitler Ron Barassi returned to the stage inside a can recycled bin. I guess getting wet with any type of liquid was his priority. If you missed the performance bad luck they were excellent...

The BDO Ramp Show
It was original and big - the national skate-n-rock tour that was at the BDO. The specially constructed mobile ramp system built for the BID DAY OUT in the main arena stood 4 metres high and 7 metres wide. The pro riders for '96 included Tony Hawk and Steve Berra skating for AIRWALK. Tom Fry and Rene Hulgren in-lining for COZMO and Rick Thorne on B.M.X for AIRWALK . As always these guys were in the air in full action.
