The following is a Product Review of SURFIN SYSTEMS fin systems as appeared in 'FREE SURF' MAGAZINE DEC '97.

The SURFIN SYSTEMS fin system was designed to allow surfers to fine tune or change completely, the ïfeel' of their equipment.

Available in a variety of colour coded flexes (white-normal, black-stiff, blue-flexy), the opportunity for personal experimentation is wide open.

A good place to start is with a stiffer centre fin and adjusting the side fins for flex to suit the conditions.

The Delrin plastic inserts(3/4' x 5/8' ) are strong enough for unlimited set ups, with Delrin also available in dowel form with a range of depths and thicknesses.

In emergency repair situations, both the screws and the inserts may be compromised, saving what otherwise may have been a ruined surf trip.

The SURFIN can also be adapted to sit ïupon' standard Fin Boxes, utilising two screws /plates.

Some basic design principles are as follows- the further foreward a Fin is set, the tighter the arc in a turn and the truer a foil is, the smoother the board will ride.

While a fin will not make a board go faster per se it can sit the board on it's optimum forward projectory and if the rocker is true you will exceed the speed limit! Lighter, recyclable plastics enable the extra foil to be included without the extra weight and cost of fibreglass.

Designer Chris Beacham- ' When I first put a fin on back in 1959 I never thought that all these years later I would still be fascinated with their effect on a board's performance.

I've had criticism for the flange ( which replaces the rovings in absorbing lateral force) and for the screws that sir proud of the board, but I never set out to make a sculpture, and to me, the extra features are worth the compromise.

At the end of the day what works best is the only option.
