THANKS, MERCI BEAUCOUP Ed: Hi Amandine, There is a lot of stuff on the Net, and if you choose a particular company and email them direct you may be able to gather more info. I can't do that for you. When you talk about Surf Companies I don't know exactly which you mean . There are many Surfboard making companies and for me these are the only valid Surf companies. However there are a lot of Clothing Companies etc that associate their image with Surfing, and for those I guess the only way to be valid is to sponsor 'Pro' surfers (see how important the Pro Tour is...) and buy a lot of advertising space in the over abundance of assorted Surf magazines. Pay the surfers and pay the mags and anyone can be a 'surf brand' these days.... sad isn't it.Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 Full Name: Ralf Organisation: E-mail: rjk@ipa.fhg.de Comments: Help!! Stuck in cold shitty Germany. Looking for information about surfing around Agadir/Morocco. (esp. cheap accomodation and flights) It¥s fuckin¥cold so please help me out. Ed: Ah the old Casbah...I remember it well. It's been 25 years since I travelled down to Agadir from London during my well spent youth, and it was well worth it. Morrocco has much Surf. I caught a plane from London to Tangier (that saved me having to spend any money on the way..) and I always use a Sleeping Bag instead of a Board cover so that saved on sheets. Before I left London I also looked around for a good 1-2 man tent. The one I found rolled up as small as a large towel, and I was able to pack it inside my suitcase. I left the airport in a Taxi driven by an Arab with his robe on and went straight to the Hotel (that was part of the ticket package) for one night to gather myself and acclimatise to the new country. The next morning I caught a modern and efficient train that went South along the coast for a great deal of the way, and saw the abundance of Surf that Morrocco offers. I got off in Casablanca for a night, checked the late evening swell, and then kept heading South the next morning by bus. Agadir was a laid back place and I lived on Mandarins and Bread for a month. The nights are cold, but waking up in the morning and seeing the point surf around that area was worth the trip, even if the occasional camel blocked the view from my beach front tent. All in all, one of my best 'value for money' surf trips.

Read Backyard IS Designer Page as well for particular tips. Do you know any shapers in Indonesia to assist you? Sweep floors in any board factory if you can, so you can get yourself inside the door so to speak. Good luck!

And, does anyone have a shaper or manufacturer they wouldn't mind recommending that may be able to build a board for this type of fin? Aloha! Ed: Hi Mitch, Geoff McCoy builds Cheyne's boards, and they remind me of another great surfer Ted Spencer, whose boards looked like they were a fin (with a board attached)! Cheyne's fin was designed by Ben Lexan (noted for designing the boat that won the Americas Cup race), and it was modelled on a WW11 Spitfire plane wing. The fin fits a standard box and so you can adjust the position on the board which like all fins, is crucial. I don't know who to suggest to shape your board, but if you can try the Fin first on another board you'll be halfway there already. Actually the 'winged keel' was invented by Carl Knox, a Californian surfer from the '40s who marketed his invention as the "Surf Lock' fin. It fitted a box as well, and it was crucial that the box was fitted flush with the board to make sure the fin was angled just right. I rode one for a couple of years on a longer board before Cheyne's model came on the market, and absolutely enjoyed it!

Ed; Well DUDE, I guess it depends on whether or not you believe Surfing can be judged to begin with, as to your views on it being an Olympic Sport. I personally don't, and I could tell you the best Surfer in the lineup on any given day, without the need for a Judging Sheet. However as Surfers, we are a part of society ( whether you like it or not), and use the facilities offered to get to the beach to begin with, so if Surfing must be judged let it be in the Olympics. After all that's only once every four years, there isn't much of an opportunity for any particular company to change seedings/rules to suit themselves, and this endless parade of local contests closing the beach might end up with some direction after all. At the end of the day we are going to need all the help we can get to save our Surf spots from other users such as Boat Marinas & Fisherman, and Olympic status could do that. Besides all those kids who don't seem to enjoy Surfing unless they are 'sponsored' will have a field day. Think of all the companies that would want to be assosciated with Surfing then!

Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 Full Name: maria mercedes sapia oquendo Organisation: E-mail: oquendos@yahoo.com Comments: write me about competitions Ed: Do you mean Surf competions Maria? Isn't that a business arrangement between a small group of Surfers, whereby a company that has no place in Surfing and does not contribute to Enviromental issues or board design, gives the local trophy maker some money, and in the name of Surfing (you can read about it in your local Surf mag ads) presents the winner with a trophy, title and cheque. My personal view is that there is far too many of them and they have lost all validity. Maybe one day those same companies will put something back into Surfing of lasting significance....

I am Graduate Law Student at Southern Cross University Australia (I acually live at Lennox Head). I have been asked to present a paper to a coming law conference re "Surf Rage" and the Law. Currently assault in the water is the same as assault on land and is a crime under our Crimes Act. My question how do the legislators/courts/police/local and state authorities deal with this growing and in my opinion serious problem. Thanks for any feed back. Geoffrey Ed: From my experience violence in the water is caused by violent people, and the Surf is just the trigger for their problems. I don't think any amount of signs/rules will change these people one little bit. I don't recall any cases whereby the police/courts have dealt with the problem. One case that the media jumped on recently was the regrettable Nat Young incident where Nat was assaulted by Michael Hutchinson after Nat had bullied his son. To his credit Nat did resolve the personal issue after a couple of hours worth of discussion with Hutchinson who apologised for the considerable pain he had inflicted. Worth mentioning is the fact that if you are assaulted by a Pro Surfer in the lineup ( who incidentally is in the course of fulfilling his contract as a Pro surfer by riding/endorsing Surf Brand products) you may have a case to sue the Pro Surfer's employer, whoever that company may be.

Full Name: Richard Lawless Organisation: E-mail: gosearch69@hotmail.com Comments: To whom it may concern, Hi, my name is Richard Lawless and I was thinking of buying my first surfboard. I want a board that I can learn on, but one that will also perform well when I become more advanced. I would mostly be surfing at Wilsonís Promontory in Victoria. I'm 14 years old, 153cm tall and weigh about 47kg. I'm pretty small for my age but I don't want to buy a board that will be too small for me when I grow. I have no surfing experience but I am O.K on a skateboard and I have been snowboarding and also go bodyboarding. The board I was thinking of buying is the Mac-T 6'6" shredder. When I go surfing, I would go with my uncle who is a good surfer and used to surf a lot when he was younger so he would teach me to surf and give me pointers. I just want to know if the shredder would be a good board to buy. Is the soft-top better than the hardtop? Would it suit me when I become more advanced? Would it last and not wear out? Will it be easy for me to learn on? What conditions is the board suited to? I donít want to buy a 7' funboard because when I become better it wouldnít suit me. I live in Sale in Gippsland and I was wondering where the closest dealer of Mac-Tís would be. If the 6'6" shredder isn't the right board, do you have any other suggestions? I'm very eager and willing to learn to surf. Please help me choose a board. My E-mail address is gosearch69@hotmail.com Please reply, yours sincerely, Richard Lawless

Now I'm trying to find out what alterations are done to a shaper's planer. Mine is still stock and works ok but what are the big guys doing to thier planers to improve them? All info is appreciated. Ed: George, Some Shapers cut their planers short because they feel it makes it easier to shape the boards. However if you haven't had a lot of experience, I suggest you just shape the normal planer way and get your boards right as your first priority. The main developement in planers for Shaping is the 'Shapers Barrel" which replaces blades in the planer with a rounded cutting bit. When we re-open the SURFIN SHOP that will be one of the products we will be featuring so stay tuned OK?

Yes, you need a wetsuit and a couple of boards would be an advantage as the swell there can be quite powerful. Hi Guys, Could you please settle an argument in our office and tell me what the significance is of the 7th wave. Thanks Michael Ed: Ah Michael, the Seventh wave.......... Tradition has it that if the seventh wave is ridden on the seventh point by the seventh son a Messiah will come to rescue our lifestyle from the boring little people presently heading up the Surfing Industry. Everyone knows that young impressionable kids follow the best Surfers so these business people buy their 'cred' by paying the Surfers to use and endorse their feeble products. Look at any Surf Mag and there you will see them all represented. We all know that valid Surf Companies are too proud to pay people to use their products don't we? I for one will always take the fourth wave of a set, satisfied in the belief that at least I had it when it was all still good..... I hope this clears up any mistaken rumours.

Subject: Our site - your site Date: Thu, 4 May 2000 Hi Chris, Really like your site - looks like a full time job (wish I could do the same!) Just dropping you a line to do a bit of 'publicity' for our website http://www.wannasurf.com If you have time, could you take a look, and maybe give us a review and/or a link from insidesurfin, (if you like the site!) We hope that our site is sufficiently different from the thousands which already exist, in so far as we are trying to build a world-wide data-base of surf spots (modest ambitions) - with the data and photos being supplied by surfers from around the world. We only supply the 'environment' in which the data can be housed. Spots are indexed with regional maps, and full reporting/messaging/forum facilities exist. We do not, however, intend to work on forcasting and 'pro-surfing', as these are areas already well served on the net. Hope you like it, and any feedback would always be appreciated. Good Waves! The best place that I have found to gather info on the Surfing Market is to ask for ADVERTISING Rate Cards from local Surf Mags. They usually prepare a few details in their Advertising Schedule to assist clients. I don't know what country you are in, but in the USA a good source of this information is 'Action Sports Retailer' mag in Sth Laguna. CA. They handle the Surf Trade Shows and are very professional. Full Name: Riley Allan McDougall Organisation: not much but I always try ! E-mail: rileymcdougall@hotmail.com Comments: sup yall at IS , I actually do have a few questions that no one here in good ol canada can ever awnser. The surf shop guys here don't know thier head's from their ass's, so I was hoping you guys could help me out. 1. I'm 6'2, 190 , should I be looking at one of these " big guy boards " or are they just a pile. I've snow boarded for the past 9 years and ride extremly agressive and I suspect that I'll be the same way once I know how to actually ride a wave, does this affect what fins I should have ? 2. I live in BC Canada, but I've saved all last year to take this year off and devote it strictly to surfing I'll be riding all of the westcoast from here in BC all the way down to Mexico, do I need more than one board, and does the difference in salt water affect my boyancy at all ? 3. Wetsuits , where do I start , um full length, 3/4 or what please help ! 4. Are there any books or vids I can pic up on how not to piss off the rampaging locals all the while learning some surfing fundamentals. That's it, if you can answer any or all of these questions I would forever be in your debt, thanks. ED: Hi Riley, Thanks for checkin' INSIDE SURFIN. OK, I'll try to answer your questions.... 1) In regards to surfboards, the bigger they are the easier they are to learn on, because they float better and paddle into waves easier. Plus there is a lot more space on them to paddle without falling off the side, and stand up(which you can do after practice catching the broken waves as they roll in).You catch the wave when you are paddling the same speed as it. The more you practice the quicker you will learn! I would look around the 7'6"-8'6"x 21"area in surfboards, and probably in the second hand rack.Boards are probably cheaper down in LA so how much surfing do you plan to do before then? You won't know what you prefer until you have caught a few waves. If you can hire one from the shop with the intention to purchase if it floats you and feels comfortable,do it. Better still ask to try it for free if you seriously look like buying it. If it's a single fin, that's fine. As a matter of fact a single fin is easier to learn on.You only need one board. When you are a better surfer, then think about higher performance and possibly a tri fin. There is plenty of time. Don't be impatient and then end up giving up because your board was too hard to ride. Salt water won't effect the size of your board although a wet wetsuit does. 2) If I was to buy only one wetsuit I would buy a full length legs/sleeves.(with booties). Then when you go south where it's warmer, you can make the decision then about another wetsuit such as a vest or 3/4. Check out what other Surfers are wearing in the area. 3)Some of the best stuff on Surfing is on the Net. Try "Santa Barbara Surfing"(linked on IS links page) for some surf lessons to read. When you get to LA you could look up Corky Carrol Surf School or Groundswell Surf Camp(both also linked from IS). A couple of days with an instructor will work wonders and both those companies are professional. The water's warmer down there and would be easier to learn in too! Hope this helps...let me know if you have any more questions,OK? Chris Beacham INSIDE SURFIN

ED: Hi Tiffany, Thanks for checkin' INSIDE SURFIN. In regards to your query on setting up a Surf label, it is a serious business proposition that will require some professional advice ultimately, if you plan to go ahead..There is strong competition in this area and so I would approach it slowly, to see if it is suitable career for you. While it can be satisfying to design your own clothes, what is there to stop any company copying you by slightly changing your designs. If they have distribution deals in place already, you will find it hard. Also do you have enough money to develope the range, pay for samples, advertise, and generally pay for business set up costs at the same time. All of this before you sell anything! Established Surf labels spend millions of dollars(advertising, trade shows, pro surfers etc) over years to establish brands! That said, with the advent of the Net, there is nothing to stop you setting up a neat little website with pics/prices of your products to test the waters. Importing cheap gear(it doesn't have to be clothes) from Mexico/Bali etc could also be an economic proposition for you to learn to understand your market better. Visit Surfshops, keep your eyes open. There is something out there that is just right for you....It's hard work..can you stay interested? That said, I wish you all the best and if you set up your own site, send INSIDE SURFIN your URL...OK? Chris Beacham INSIDE SURFIN

I >>researched the USSC, etc.. >> >>EOF >> Hi Rebecca, Thanks for checkin' INSIDE SURFIN. Have you checked our GUEST OPINION Page? You could email the author who has put a bit of thought into the proposals how Surfing could be an Olympic Sport. Also I have enclosed an Article mailed to us from Portugal(you will have to make do with their English translation!) where the ISA is based. It looks like Surfing is going to be accepted, and I suggest you email Pedro at his email as well.He would know exactly what the situation is. In Sydney, many Surfers were disappointed that it was not accepted for the 2000 Games, while some Surfers don't like the idea. They think the Surfing would lose it's 'soul'. For me that has already happened, as so many Surfers work out how to make a living from it. Some don't like the idea that the Clothing Companies have such a huge influence within our Sport, being the biggest advertisers in Mags,Contests etc. Many outside Companies have expressed interest in being involved with Surfing, but this could break the monopoly of the Clothing Companies and so these directions are usually stifled. For me Surfing already is commercial, and any interest from Big Companies would help the Surfers put their Sport in the same Prize Money brackets as many other more 'normal' Sports. I hope this helps a bit, let me know if you need more info. Good luck, Chris Beacham INSIDE SURFIN

From: "Randall R. Redpath" hawkgt@bellatlantic.net To: surfer@firehorse.com Subject: Couple questions Hey Buds, Got a couple questions went to Australlia on vacation met a couple of locals and really got into surfing got rather good at it. I live in New Jersey primo surfing spot NOT! only when a tropical storm comes in anyway before I go to a local Surf shop and make an ass of myself want to know what type of board I should get I'm 6' 4" about 185 what are your opinions Thanxs Sharkbait ED Couple of Questions- Hi Randall, I don't know what surfboard you tried, whether it was a single or tri fin. Both work differently, and most maturer Surfers tend to learn on a single fin, purely for the size of the board if nothing else. Depending on where you intend to surf, bigger boards are harder to fall off. They also catch waves easier which is critical in learning to get to your feet. I would suggest going into a Surf Shop and selecting a second hand 7'6"-8' board and offer to hire it, with the intention of buying it if it floats you OK(providing your hire fee is taken off the price off course). If it is a tri fin, fine. There's plenty of time to get a new one when you know what feels best for you. DON'T be influenced by trends and brand names. They do not have any guarantees and are usually made of the same materials. If a board has held together for a year or so that's a sign it will last for a while. Some new boards break in a month these days!! Happy Surfing
