Suggested Fitting Instructions For Surfin Systems Fin

NOTE: WHILE IT IS POSSIBLE TO RESHAPE THE FIN, SAND THE FLANGE FLUSH, AND BUILD UP THE STANDARD SHAPE WITH GLASS, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE FIN IS TRIALLED FIRST BEFORE ANY MODIFICATIONS.

The following procedures, by no means the only way, have proved to be suitable in Factory conditions:

  1. Place Fins on shaped Blank and mark Insert positions. Stringer must be shaved flat for Centre Fin. Ideal screw setting is on the T-section for the front slot and halfway along the back slot. Discerning Shapers may mark Dimensions/Credit underneath the Centre Fin area.

  2. Using a 5/8" (16 mm) Hole Saw premarked for 3/4" depth, drill the Blank. A simple Jig may be devised by first drilling through a flat piece of timber to use as a stabiliser 'guide'.

  3. Sand Inserts.

  4. Mix a small batch of Resin/Glass and coat both Insert and hole. A partly threaded screw can be used for setting Insewrt upright in the hole. A wider strip of masking tape may be placed over the top of the Insert setting to flatten out any clear resin overflow and ensure a flush glassing surface.

  5. Cut two-three patches of glass (preferably staggered) to lay on Insert area for maximum strength.

  6. Prepare Board for Glassing in the standard manner with the patches beneath the main overlay.

  7. After Sanding the Board the Inserts can now be drilled to accept the self tapping screws. CARE MUST BE TAKEN IN THE FIRST THREADINGS THAT THE SCREWDRIVER IS HELD FIRMLY SO AS NOT TO SLIP INTO THE BOARD!
